Germany is a country better explained by structure than by world titles. The 1926 founding congress of the ITTF was held in Berlin, and the Bundesliga launched in 1966 has long been regarded as the world's strongest club league, drawing top players from every country and forming the economic backbone of professional table tennis in Europe. The national training center in Dusseldorf, shared with club side Borussia Dusseldorf, is Europe's largest facility dedicated to the sport. Germany has never won an individual World Championship title — Eberhard Schöler's runner-up finish in men's singles in Munich in 1969 remains its best result — but it has consistently played the role of China's leading challenger in the team events. Its four Olympic team medals, men's silver in Beijing 2008 and Tokyo 2020, men's bronze in London 2012, and women's silver in Rio 2016, rank behind only China and Japan. Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov held the top spot among European players for nearly two decades, each reaching world number one and setting the record for most European Championship titles.
