Manfred Eigen (1971) described replicators as mutant clouds; RNA virology later used that picture for within-host diversity. WHO used Greek-letter VOC names (Alpha 2020; Delta and Omicron 2021) to track lineages that spread or partly evaded prior immunity.
Mutation and variants · RNA copy error
Many RNA virus polymerases insert about 10^-3 to 10^-5 substitutions per site per round — far sloppier than typical DNA replication. Influenza drift is gradual HA/NA change; shift is rare reassortment that produced the 1957 H2N2 and 1968 H3N2 pandemic subtypes.

Mutation and variants · Eight influenza segments
Influenza A carries eight RNA segments, so two viruses in one host can shuffle genes — a historical fact about pandemics, not a method. Populations of genomes, not cartoon villains — RNA viruses copy sloppily, and public-health names track clusters that spread.
Mutation and variants · RNA viruses such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2 illustrate the patt
RNA viruses such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2 illustrate the pattern at public-health scale: error-prone replication, then selection by immunity and transmission. Pandemic years are when reassortment or a new zoonotic jump becomes visible. Most evolution is quieter winter drift.
