Physics pay is genuinely bimodal: a physics PhD who stays in academia can expect a modest, if stable, salary for years as a postdoc before ever competing for a permanent position, while the same degree, applied to quantitative finance or the technology industry, routinely pays several times as much.
Demand also runs on two tracks. The number of tenure-track academic positions has grown only slowly for decades, while industries that value physicists' mathematical training — semiconductors, quantum computing, machine learning, finance — have expanded hiring briskly, absorbing a majority of new PhDs who do not stay in a university.
薪酬阶梯
Typical annual stipend for physics PhD students at US research universities, mid-2020s figures.
Typical postdoc pay at US universities and national laboratories, following NIH/NSF benchmark scales, mid-2020s.
US median annual wage for physicists, Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023–24 data.
Roughly the top-decile band nationally; senior scientists at national laboratories and industry R&D commonly reach this range.
Total compensation for physics PhDs hired as quantitative researchers at top hedge funds and trading firms, mid-2020s; the highest-paid common outcome for the degree.

Switzerland
Typical range for research physicists at CERN and ETH Zurich, mid-2020s; offset by Switzerland's high cost of living.
Germany
Typical range for postdoctoral and staff physicists at Max Planck institutes and universities, mid-2020s.
United Kingdom
Typical range for university and national-laboratory physicists, mid-2020s industry estimates.
China
Typical range at Chinese Academy of Sciences institutes and top universities, mid-2020s; well below Western pay in dollar terms but rising.

谁在雇用他们
CERN
The European Organization for Nuclear Research, founded in 1954, runs the Large Hadron Collider and employs or hosts thousands of physicists from over 100 countries.
Fermilab
The US Department of Energy's premier particle-physics laboratory outside Chicago, home of the Tevatron collider until 2011 and now a hub for neutrino research.
Max Planck Society
A network of independent German research institutes, several dedicated to physics, that has produced dozens of Nobel laureates since its founding in 1948.
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
The US government's measurement-science laboratory, where Chien-Shiung Wu's 1956 parity experiment ran and where physicists still define and refine physical standards.
Renaissance Technologies
A hedge fund built almost entirely by mathematicians and physicists rather than traditional finance professionals, famous for hiring PhD scientists over MBAs.
Nokia Bell Labs
The historic industrial research lab, formerly AT&T's, that produced the transistor and radio astronomy's discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation; still funds physics research today.
需求去向何方
The academic bottleneck is well documented and long-standing: US institutions award roughly 1,800 physics PhDs a year against a few hundred new tenure-track openings, and the ratio has not meaningfully improved in decades, pushing the large majority of graduates toward industry, government labs or careers only loosely connected to physics research.
Outside academia, demand is genuinely strong and growing: the semiconductor industry, quantum computing startups and AI research labs all actively recruit physics PhDs for their mathematical modeling and problem-solving training, often paying considerably more than an equivalent academic position ever would.
