Methods
- Trio first — If the three do not click, it is not a chypre.
- Fruit or flower dress — Peach or a bouquet — one dress.
- Moss reconstruction — Evernyl + patch + bitter greens.
- Leather tilt — Isoquinolines or birch toward Bandit.
- IFRA math — Dose moss at the legal ceiling, then stop.
Steps
- Lay the basement
Labdanum and moss (or Evernyl).
Without it you have a cologne.
- Add bergamot
The top is not optional.
Treated peel for sun safety.
- Choose the child
Peach, floral, leather, or aromatics.
All four at once is a mess.
- Patchouli as glue
Coty’s dirt.
A little; it can steal toward earth-oriental.
- Age the juice
Chypres need maceration.
Moss accords change for weeks.
- Compare to Mitsouko
The calibration bottle.
If it is sweeter and moss-free, rename the brief.
Limits
- Oakmoss law — 1917 formulas are not restageable as written.
- Approachability — Bitter-moss splits testers.
- Name confusion — “Chypre” on a fruity-floral is often a lie.
A good Chypre formula knows its IFRA ceiling before it knows its ad.
