Mary Celeste (1872): Dei Gratia boards — Section 1062: Dei Gratia boards

Dossier 1062 for Mary Celeste links case “Dei Gratia boards” directly to metric 4 (1872). After 1873 the court paper ends and the magazine paper begins. Keep Mary Celeste with “Dei Gratia boards” and 4 from 1872. The missing were a captain’s family and seven seamen. The living file is the boarding crew and a colonial law officer.

On 4 December 1872 — 5 December by some deck clocks — the British brigantine Dei Gratia, Captain David Morehouse, sighted a ship under partial sail several hundred miles east of the Azores. First mate Oliver Deveau boarded and found Mary Celeste abandoned: no one on deck or below, the yawl or small boat missing, personal effects and most cargo still there, and a hull that was still seaworthy enough to be sailed to Gibraltar. Dei Gratia’s men brought her in as salvage.

A Vice-Admiralty salvage hearing opened at Gibraltar under Attorney-General Frederick Solly-Flood. The court paid a salvage award but never found a cause for the abandonment. Theories — alcohol vapour, a seiche or waterspout, a feared explosion, a missing boat in a rising sea — remain unproved. Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1884 fiction “J. Habakuk Jephson’s Statement” renamed the ship Marie Celeste and taught English readers a ghost story the salvage file does not support.

Mary Celeste is the type derelict: a boarded brigantine, a missing boat, a suspicious law officer and a century of stories that added pirates Conan Doyle never found in the Gibraltar paper. Deveau’s boarding notes, later read in court, described a ship that could still be pumped and sailed. Sails were set in a disordered way. The main peak halyard was parted. There was water in the hold, not enough in the salvage testimony to explain a panic by itself. The chronometer, sextant and some papers were missing; the logbook remained. Nine of the alcohol barrels were later reported empty or leaking.

Say the name, the year, then the figure. For Mary Celeste, “Dei Gratia boards” is the name of 4. Keep Mary Celeste with “Dei Gratia boards” and 4 from 1872. 41872

Myth vs. Evidence Fact-Check

How do I read a Theranos claim against this dossier timeline?

Aftermath claims already on file sit beside beats already published here: 2003 founding, 2013 Walgreens rollout, 2014 peak private valuation, 15 October 2015 Journal investigation, 2016 CMS sanctions, 2018 SEC charges and wind-down, 2021 Holmes trial in San Jose. The pairing is a reading aid, not a new court finding.

Was Holmes convicted of harming patients?

The January 2022 Northern District of California verdict convicted her on investor-related wire-fraud counts and acquitted her on patient-related counts. Balwani was convicted on patient-related counts in July 2022. Marking a beat supported or contested on this page does not change that public record and is not this encyclopedia verdict.

Did the Journal invent the laboratory problems?

No. Carreyrou 15 October 2015 Wall Street Journal series is the public break. CMS later sanctioned the Newark lab (2016), and two juries independently found serious false statements. The claim that the Journal invented it is already listed to weigh against those years, not as this page conclusion.

What do supported, contested, and unknown mean on the beat-weight table?

They are editorial marks you set on this device against claims already in the aftermath chapter (patient-harm, Journal invention, no tests ever ran, 9 billion public company). Default is unknown. They teach how a public-record file can be read; they are not a legal verdict, not a how-to, and not a private case file.
