Chernobyl disaster (1986): Pripyat evacuated — Section 1025: Pripyat evacuated

Analysis 1025 for Chernobyl disaster anchors “Pripyat evacuated” to indicator 27 so readers can verify the scale. Peer-review duties for land-based civil reactors, with safety culture in the IAEA supporting texts. Keep Chernobyl disaster with “Pripyat evacuated” and 27 from 1986. Plant managers were imprisoned. Design bureaux were not in the dock. That split still shapes how blame is taught.

On 26 April 1986 an explosion at reactor 4 of the Chernobyl plant in the Ukrainian SSR became the worst nuclear accident on the public record and rewrote international nuclear law. At 01:23 on 26 April 1986, unit 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded during a planned turbine-rundown test. The reactor was an RBMK-1000, graphite-moderated and light-water-cooled, a Soviet design with a positive void coefficient and a slow emergency-protection system. Two workers died in the immediate blast; UNSCEAR later recorded 28 further deaths from acute radiation syndrome among plant and emergency staff within four months.

Pripyat, the purpose-built atomgrad next to the plant, was evacuated on 27 April. The Soviet state confirmed an accident only after Swedish monitors detected the plume on 28 April. IAEA’s INSAG-1 (1986) first stressed operator error; INSAG-7 (1992) shifted the main cause to design and a weak safety culture. The 1987 Chernobyl trial convicted plant managers. The New Safe Confinement was slid over the 1986 sarcophagus on 29 November 2016.

The engineering case is closed: a test plus RBMK design features produced a prompt power excursion. What remains contested is how to count later cancers and how to value the exclusion zone. English-language memory now runs through the 2005 Chernobyl Forum, UNSCEAR annexes and, after 2019, a television miniseries that is not a primary source.

In 1986, Chernobyl disaster keeps 27 and “Pripyat evacuated.” Change the verb when the status changes. Keep Chernobyl disaster with “Pripyat evacuated” and 27 from 1986. 271986

Myth vs. Evidence Fact-Check

How do I read a Theranos claim against this dossier timeline?

Aftermath claims already on file sit beside beats already published here: 2003 founding, 2013 Walgreens rollout, 2014 peak private valuation, 15 October 2015 Journal investigation, 2016 CMS sanctions, 2018 SEC charges and wind-down, 2021 Holmes trial in San Jose. The pairing is a reading aid, not a new court finding.

Was Holmes convicted of harming patients?

The January 2022 Northern District of California verdict convicted her on investor-related wire-fraud counts and acquitted her on patient-related counts. Balwani was convicted on patient-related counts in July 2022. Marking a beat supported or contested on this page does not change that public record and is not this encyclopedia verdict.

Did the Journal invent the laboratory problems?

No. Carreyrou 15 October 2015 Wall Street Journal series is the public break. CMS later sanctioned the Newark lab (2016), and two juries independently found serious false statements. The claim that the Journal invented it is already listed to weigh against those years, not as this page conclusion.

What do supported, contested, and unknown mean on the beat-weight table?

They are editorial marks you set on this device against claims already in the aftermath chapter (patient-harm, Journal invention, no tests ever ran, 9 billion public company). Default is unknown. They teach how a public-record file can be read; they are not a legal verdict, not a how-to, and not a private case file.
