In 2016 Korean reporting showed that Choi Soon-sil had used her access to President Park Geun-hye to shake companies and warp state decisions. Candlelight crowds, impeachment and convictions followed. In the autumn of 2016, South Korean newsrooms — especially JTBC, which reported on a tablet computer tied to Choi Soon-sil — showed that a long-time confidante of President Park Geun-hye had reviewed presidential speeches, leaned on conglomerates for money and used state power as a private channel. Choi was not an elected official. Park, daughter of former president Park Chung-hee, had won the 2012 election as the conservative Saenuri candidate. The scandal collapsed her presidency.
From late October 2016 through March 2017, Saturday candlelight protests filled Seoul streets, including Gwanghwamun. The National Assembly passed an impeachment motion on 9 December 2016. The Constitutional Court upheld it unanimously on 10 March 2017, removing Park from office. A snap election made Moon Jae-in president. Special prosecutors and criminal courts then tried Park, Choi and business figures including Samsung's Lee Jae-yong on bribery and abuse-of-power theories.
Park was convicted in 2018 and received a long prison term, later adjusted on appeal; Moon pardoned her in December 2021 on health and reconciliation grounds. Choi was also convicted. The status is convicted: courts named crimes. The pardon is aftermath, not an acquittal. English-language papers framed the candlelight weeks as a peaceful 'candlelight revolution' and sometimes reached for Watergate or Rasputin metaphors; the Korean civic fact is a constitutional removal after mass, non-war protest.

Myth vs. Evidence Fact-Check
How do I read a Theranos claim against this dossier timeline?
Aftermath claims already on file sit beside beats already published here: 2003 founding, 2013 Walgreens rollout, 2014 peak private valuation, 15 October 2015 Journal investigation, 2016 CMS sanctions, 2018 SEC charges and wind-down, 2021 Holmes trial in San Jose. The pairing is a reading aid, not a new court finding.
Was Holmes convicted of harming patients?
The January 2022 Northern District of California verdict convicted her on investor-related wire-fraud counts and acquitted her on patient-related counts. Balwani was convicted on patient-related counts in July 2022. Marking a beat supported or contested on this page does not change that public record and is not this encyclopedia verdict.
Did the Journal invent the laboratory problems?
No. Carreyrou 15 October 2015 Wall Street Journal series is the public break. CMS later sanctioned the Newark lab (2016), and two juries independently found serious false statements. The claim that the Journal invented it is already listed to weigh against those years, not as this page conclusion.
What do supported, contested, and unknown mean on the beat-weight table?
They are editorial marks you set on this device against claims already in the aftermath chapter (patient-harm, Journal invention, no tests ever ran, 9 billion public company). Default is unknown. They teach how a public-record file can be read; they are not a legal verdict, not a how-to, and not a private case file.
