The minimum outdoor kit is a bright cap, goggles that handle glare, and a way to be seen. A wetsuit is a temperature and flotation tool with rule bands, not a default.
Tow floats, whistles and thermometers are cheap. They do not replace a chosen exit or a person on shore.
Core kit
- Bright silicone cap — Orange or pink for visibility to boats. Club latex caps tear; carry a spare.
- Tinted or mirrored goggles — Sun on water blinds clear indoor goggles. A second clear pair for overcast days.
- Tow float — A dry-bag buoy on a waist leash. Visibility and a rest handle; not a life-raft.
- Wetsuit (when rules and temperature say so) — Swimming-specific suits have flexible shoulders. Triathlon suits are the common rental.
- Thermometer — A cheap probe prevents “it felt fine” stories after a 12 °C shock.
- Watch with GPS — Useful for mapping a first lake loop; not required for a club out-and-back.
Optional
- Neoprene cap and gloves — For shoulder-season swims. They change stroke feel; test before a race.
- Ear plugs — Cold water in the ear canal can trigger an ice-cream headache or caloric vertigo in some people.
- Grease — Lanolin or similar at seams and chafing points on long Channel-style swims — not a heat strategy by itself.
- Safety whistle — On the tow-float lanyard. Boats hear a whistle better than a shout.
Care
- Rinse the suit — Inland lakes leave algae; seas leave salt. Both rot zippers if left in a trunk.
- Dry the float bladder — A sealed wet float grows a smell that announces itself in a shared car.
- Check the leash clip — A failed waist clip is how a float becomes litter and a swimmer becomes invisible.
- Retire fogged lenses — Anti-fog fails; spit is a field fix, replacement is the plan.
Budget bands
- First lake — Cap, outdoor goggles, tow float. Swim where there is already cover.
- Season regular — Own wetsuit if the local water sits in the suit-legal band most of the year.
- Event bag — GPS watch, spare cap, anti-chafe, and the event’s required kit list.
- Expedition — Escort boat, ratification fees and grease — a Channel budget is not a Saturday 2 km budget.
Outdoor kit is about being seen and staying inside a temperature plan. The expensive expedition layer is optional and rare.
