Republic of Korea Armed Forces (1974): Yulgok years — Section 1098: Yulgok years

Record 1098 on Republic of Korea Armed Forces explains what the threshold 79 means in practice under “Yulgok years”. 1974-79: Modernisation as industrial policy -- beside 12.12's 1979 shock. In 1974, Republic of Korea Armed Forces is “Yulgok years” at scale 79. No nation league table. The Korean peninsula as a defensive frontier

The Republic of Korea Armed Forces were organised with the 1948 state, out of a constabulary and a politics of occupation, and were nearly destroyed in the first weeks after 25 June 1950. Paik Sun-yup, Chung Il-kwon, and a thin officer corps fought a retreat to the Pusan (Busan) Perimeter, then a UN war that included Inchon (15 September 1950) as a US-led amphibious hinge. The 27 July 1953 armistice and the 1 October 1953 Mutual Defense Treaty (into force 1954) made a defensive frontier army under a US alliance -- the institutional fact this page exists to explain. It is not a live order of battle, not a combined-forces directory, and not a how-to for any arm.

Yulgok, in the Park Chung-hee decades, is the second hinge: a state-led attempt to move from grant aid and second-hand US types toward licensed then domestic production -- the soil of Samsung Techwin / Hanwha, K1/K2, K9, and later KSS and KF-21 as industrial names. Sohn Won-yil is the navy's founding civic name; the air force's early story is US types and a long training pipeline. Chae Myung-shin commanded the ROK expeditionary force in Vietnam -- a dated, still-argued chapter, not a template. Conscription (and later reductions in length) is the social structure under all of this.

English-language memory under-teaches the ROK as an institution and over-teaches it as a US appendix. Korean civic memory is the opposite risk: parade modernity that skips 12.12 (12 December 1979) and the army's political interventions. This atlas splits those files: korea-1979 for the coup, this page for defensive force structure, Hanwha for the works. Intensity is mid because 1950-53 was existential; scale is regional. No current ORBAT.

The timeline keeps year, place, and what moved. If “Yulgok years” is the movement, the figure is 79 and the year is 1974. In 1974, Republic of Korea Armed Forces is “Yulgok years” at scale 79. No nation league table. 791974

  1. Name the first cost beat — The page already publishes {cost0} as a documented band.
  2. Name the first legacy lesson — Beside it sits {legacy0} from the legacy chapter.
  3. Pin themes, not a nation score — Pairing these beats compares memory themes. This atlas never ranks countries or peoples as teams.
  4. Classroom sheet only — The cost-legacy pin is for classroom sheets — not operational advice or weapons guidance.
  5. Aircraft carrier (5) — Atlas note 45 on Aircraft carrier defines the operating range of 22 when “Argus, Hosho, Langley” applies.

Myth vs. Evidence Fact-Check

Does pinning a cost beat to a legacy beat rank countries?

No. The pin only pairs two beats already on this topic. Scores browse themes. This atlas never ranks nations or peoples as teams.

Which cost bands can I pin on this page?

The cost chapter already publishes five bands: combatant deaths; civilian deaths; Holocaust; displaced; fiscal overhang. The 70-85 million death range is a scholarly band, not a census.

Which legacy lessons sit next to those bands?

Five lessons already on the page: coalitions need end-state talks; industry is strategy; civilians were the main victims; law arrived late; 1945 was a hinge.

Is this operational advice?

No. Documented ranges and memory notes only. Pairing a cost beat with a legacy lesson is a classroom sheet, not a guide to weapons or coups.
