Major honours
Sponsored by Milanese construction-adhesives maker Mapei from 1993 to 2002, this team reigned for a decade as the most dominant organisation in one-day racing history. At the 1996 Paris-Roubaix, Johan Museeuw, Gianluca Bortolami and Andrea Tafi rode into the Roubaix velodrome together and swept the entire podium, and the team repeated the feat in both 1998 and 1999. Starting with Franco Ballerini in 1995, the team won Paris-Roubaix six times, the Tour of Flanders three times, and Liege-Bastogne-Liege twice through Paolo Bettini, stacking up more than ten Monument wins. In stage racing, Tony Rominger won the 1994 Vuelta and 1995 Giro. When the sponsor withdrew in 2002, sport director Patrick Lefevere took the entire Belgian staff with him to found Quick-Step, and that lineage continues today.

Rivalry
On the 1990s cobbles, the rivalry axis ran through Museeuw against Andrei Tchmil and Peter Van Petegem. Internal competition was just as fierce: at the 1996 Roubaix, it emerged that the director had used the radio to designate which of the three riders would win, sparking controversy.
