Dave Brailsford, who had made the British track team an Olympic powerhouse, founded this team in 2010 as Team Sky to carry that methodology onto the road. At the launch press conference he promised a British Tour de France winner within five years, and delivered in three, with Bradley Wiggins in 2012. Chris Froome followed in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017, Geraint Thomas in 2018 and Egan Bernal in 2019, giving the team seven Tour titles in eight years. Froome also won the 2017 Vuelta and 2018 Giro to hold all three Grand Tour titles at once, and Bernal added the 2021 Giro. The meticulous optimisation known as "marginal gains", and the mountain tactic of a domestique setting a relentless, steady high-wattage pace, defined 2010s racing, though it also drew criticism for being dull. Chemicals company INEOS took over the sponsorship in 2019.

The team's most famous conflicts have come from within rather than from rivals. Wiggins and Froome in 2012, and Froome and Thomas in 2018, each fought for the overall title while wearing the same jersey, and both times the team had to settle the pecking order over the radio.
