Major honours
The financial and political center of cricket today. India played its first Test at Lord's in 1932 and took 20 years to record its first win, over England at Madras in 1952, but everything changed when Kapil Dev's team lifted the World Cup at Lord's in 1983. That win, arriving just as television was spreading nationwide, shifted cricket's commercial center of gravity to the subcontinent, a shift the Indian Premier League — launched in 2008 — later turned into a permanent institution. India's on-field results have climbed to match. It won the World Cup on home soil in Mumbai in 2011, the T20 World Cup in 2007 and 2024, and the Champions Trophy in 2002, 2013 and 2025. From 2013 to 2024 India won eighteen consecutive home Test series, building a home fortress, before New Zealand ended that run with a 3-0 sweep in 2024. Sachin Tendulkar's 100 international centuries and Virat Kohli's more than 50 ODI centuries were both built inside this team.

Rivalry
Matches against Pakistan draw some of the largest television audiences in world sport, though bilateral series have effectively stopped for political reasons and the teams now meet only at ICC events. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia has been the sport's fiercest Test rivalry since Kolkata in 2001.
