Major honours
Bangladesh earned ODI status by winning the 1997 ICC Trophy and became the tenth Test nation in 2000, playing its first Test against India in Dhaka. The first decade was brutal — it took five years to win a first Test, and that came against Zimbabwe. In white-ball cricket, though, Bangladesh produced upsets early, beating Pakistan at the 1999 World Cup, knocking out India at the 2007 World Cup, and reaching the quarterfinals in 2015. For years the team's core was Shakib Al Hasan, one of the few players ever ranked world number one all-rounder across all three formats, alongside a generation built around Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal. Bangladesh beat England at home in a Test in 2016 and Australia at home in 2017, beat New Zealand away in a Test at Mount Maunganui in 2022, and swept a series 2-0 away in Pakistan in 2024. Slow, turning home pitches remain the team's biggest weapon.
