Baby naming

The parental craft of giving a name — family politics, dated frequency files, legal lists and the refusal of luck charts.

Naming a baby is one of the few design problems that is both intimate and permanently public. The child will teach the string to every room they enter.

Parents juggle kin honour, sound, legality and fashion. Official files (SSA, ONS, Statistics Korea) can inform the fashion piece if you keep the year on the table.

This page is a craft guide. It will not pick a winner, invent this year’s global #1, or read a fortune in the strokes.

Frequently asked questions

When is the name legally real?
When the birth is registered — deadlines differ. A ceremony can precede or follow the file.
Should we use last year’s most popular name?
Only if you like that taste. Lieberson treated peaks as fashion, not as a quality award. Cite SSA/ONS/KOSTAT by year if you cite a rank.
How do we handle grandparents’ vetoes?
Name the value (honour vs. ease) instead of pretending there is a cosmic right answer. Generation syllables can be a compromise in some families.
Are meaning charts useful?
Etymology is a story you can tell. Stroke-count luck and destiny apps are not part of this atlas’s craft.
What if our country has a banned list?
Iceland, Germany and Japan can refuse a string. Check before you print the cards.
Will a “White-sounding” name protect our child?
Bertrand and Mullainathan documented U.S. callback bias. That is a fact about employers, not a moral requirement to hide heritage.
How many names should a baby have?
Follow the local system: extra given names, two surnames, a generation character. Do not force an English template.
Is this medical or legal advice?
No. Registrars and, where relevant, clinicians own deadlines. This page is educational.
