Meaning and etymology

Where a name comes from is history — roots, borrowings and folk glosses — not a forecast of the person who wears it.

Etymology asks how a name entered a language and what its pieces meant to earlier speakers. That is historical linguistics, not a personality report.

Baby-name sites flatten this work into a one-line gloss (“strong,” “grace”) and then sell the gloss as a hope. The gloss may be roughly right as history and still useless as prediction.

This page keeps meaning in the archive. Chinese generation names, Korean hanja and 돌림자 are explained as kin design. They are not fortune-telling devices.

Frequently asked questions

If a name means “king,” will the child lead?
No. Thousands of people wear royal etymologies. Outcomes come from lives, not from Proto-Germanic roots.
Are site glosses reliable?
Often oversimplified or wrong. Prefer onomastic dictionaries (Hanks) and language-specific scholarship.
What about Hebrew, Arabic or Sanskrit names?
Many are transparent in their home languages. Transparency is still not destiny. Translate as culture, not as a spell.
Do hanja meanings pick a fate?
Hanja supply etymological senses that families may intend as hopes or virtues. This atlas describes that practice; it does not endorse stroke-count luck.
Is folk etymology the same as etymology?
No. Folk etymology is a later story speakers tell (a place-name “explained” by a legend). It is cultural data, not the original derivation.
Why is cultural depth high on this page?
Because meaning systems are old and elaborate. Depth is not the same as truth about the future.
Can etymology help me choose?
It can help you tell a family story or avoid an accidental rude word in another language. That is craft, not magic.
Where do SSA and ONS fit?
They count strings, not meanings. A rising name can have a beautiful gloss and still be fashion.
