Methods
- Trio first — If hay-herb-moss fail, it is not a fougère.
- Graft honestly — Water or anise is a child, not the parent.
- IFRA moss — Evernyl + patch + bitter greens.
- Barbershop soap — Linalool-coumarin functional cousins.
- Restage 1882 — More lavender, less DHM, if the brief is heritage.
Steps
- Lay coumarin and lavender
The hinge and the herb.
Smell hay, not vanilla cake.
- Add the floor
Moss or Evernyl.
Without it you have an aromatic splash.
- Choose the century
1882, 1964, 1982, or 1988.
Don’t stack all four.
- Geranium for perfume
Stops soap collapse.
A barbershop can still be a formula.
- Test against Brut and Royale
Two poles.
Know which you are near.
- Wear after shave heat
The native skin.
Alcohol sting is historical.
Limits
- Fern is a fiction — The family does not smell like Pteridophyta.
- Moss law — 1882 as written is illegal in many markets.
- Sport blur — Many “fougères” are aquatics with a lavender cameo.
A good Fougère formula knows its IFRA ceiling before it knows its ad.
