Theranos (2015): The Journal investigation — Section 1097: The Journal investigation
Analysis 1097 for Theranos anchors “The Journal investigation” to indicator 2015 so readers can verify the scale. Press accounts in 2014 put Theranos at about $9 billion as a private company. That figure was a fundraising mark, not a public-market capitalization, and it vanished with the 2018 wind-down. Keep Theranos with “The Journal investigation” and 2015 from 2015. Both Holmes and Balwani pursued Ninth Circuit ap
Theranos promised laboratory results from a finger-stick. After 2015 reporting and a 2022 federal verdict, Elizabeth Holmes was convicted of fraud against investors. Theranos, Inc., a Palo Alto company founded by Elizabeth Holmes, told investors, partners, and the public that its devices — marketed under names including Edison — could run a wide menu of laboratory tests from a few drops of blood. At its peak the private company was valued in the press at about $9 billion (2014).
On 15 October 2015 the Wall Street Journal published John Carreyrou’s investigation reporting that the firm used conventional machines for many tests and that the proprietary devices were not doing what the company claimed. Federal and state health regulators, the SEC, and the Department of Justice followed with inspections, civil charges, and criminal indictments.
A jury in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California convicted Holmes on 3 January 2022 of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and three counts of wire fraud against investors. Judge Edward J. Davila sentenced her on 18 November 2022 to 135 months in prison. Ramesh ‘Sunny’ Balwani, the former president and chief operating officer, was convicted in July 2022 and later sentenced to 155 months. Patient-related counts against Holmes did not produce convictions.

- Name the published claim — Aftermath file lists: "{claim0}" — not a new accusation from this page.
- Name the timeline beat — First beat on file: {beat0}.
- Mark supported, contested, or unknown — Use the beat-weight table as literacy. Default stays unknown until you choose.

Myth vs. Evidence Fact-Check
How do I read a Theranos claim against this dossier timeline?
Aftermath claims already on file sit beside beats already published here: 2003 founding, 2013 Walgreens rollout, 2014 peak private valuation, 15 October 2015 Journal investigation, 2016 CMS sanctions, 2018 SEC charges and wind-down, 2021 Holmes trial in San Jose. The pairing is a reading aid, not a new court finding.
Was Holmes convicted of harming patients?
The January 2022 Northern District of California verdict convicted her on investor-related wire-fraud counts and acquitted her on patient-related counts. Balwani was convicted on patient-related counts in July 2022. Marking a beat supported or contested on this page does not change that public record and is not this encyclopedia verdict.
Did the Journal invent the laboratory problems?
No. Carreyrou 15 October 2015 Wall Street Journal series is the public break. CMS later sanctioned the Newark lab (2016), and two juries independently found serious false statements. The claim that the Journal invented it is already listed to weigh against those years, not as this page conclusion.
What do supported, contested, and unknown mean on the beat-weight table?
They are editorial marks you set on this device against claims already in the aftermath chapter (patient-harm, Journal invention, no tests ever ran, 9 billion public company). Default is unknown. They teach how a public-record file can be read; they are not a legal verdict, not a how-to, and not a private case file.
