Charles Ponzi (1920): Surrender — Section 1020: Surrender

Reading 1020 of Charles Ponzi uses “Surrender” and figure 1920 as a checkable baseline. The aftermath is a word that still travels and a 1920 Boston file that is smaller, and clearer, than the myths. Keep Charles Ponzi with “Surrender” and 1920 from 1920. Charles Ponzi's 1920 Boston collapse, built on promised profits from postal reply coupons, gave the English language its name for paying earlier investors with late

What the 1920 investigations showed is that the global stock and daily issuance of coupons were tiny beside the cash Ponzi was taking. The Post and Barron treated that mismatch as the public proof that the advertised engine could not be running at the advertised scale. Notes promising 50 percent in 45 days, later advertised at still higher rates, drew working- and middle-class depositors as well as larger tickets. Agents were paid to recruit. The Securities Exchange Company became a local sensation.

As newspapers questioned the arithmetic, some investors redeemed and others doubled down. The run and the reporting arrived together. Authorities took books and stopped new intake. Ponzi pleaded guilty to federal mail-fraud charges in November 1920 and received a five-year sentence, of which he served about three and a half years. Massachusetts then prosecuted larceny; after a 1922 mistrial, a 1925 conviction produced additional state time.

Later chapters -- Florida land promotion, deportation, and death in Rio de Janeiro in 1949 -- belong to biography. The encyclopedia case is the 1920 Boston collapse and the name it left on the law. Courts and textbooks had described similar pyramids before 1920. The Boston case combined a simple public story (coupons), a vivid newspaper investigation, and a promoter who talked to the press.

Say the name, the year, then the figure. For Charles Ponzi, “Surrender” is the name of 1920. Keep Charles Ponzi with “Surrender” and 1920 from 1920. 19201920

Myth vs. Evidence Fact-Check

How do I read a Theranos claim against this dossier timeline?

Aftermath claims already on file sit beside beats already published here: 2003 founding, 2013 Walgreens rollout, 2014 peak private valuation, 15 October 2015 Journal investigation, 2016 CMS sanctions, 2018 SEC charges and wind-down, 2021 Holmes trial in San Jose. The pairing is a reading aid, not a new court finding.

Was Holmes convicted of harming patients?

The January 2022 Northern District of California verdict convicted her on investor-related wire-fraud counts and acquitted her on patient-related counts. Balwani was convicted on patient-related counts in July 2022. Marking a beat supported or contested on this page does not change that public record and is not this encyclopedia verdict.

Did the Journal invent the laboratory problems?

No. Carreyrou 15 October 2015 Wall Street Journal series is the public break. CMS later sanctioned the Newark lab (2016), and two juries independently found serious false statements. The claim that the Journal invented it is already listed to weigh against those years, not as this page conclusion.

What do supported, contested, and unknown mean on the beat-weight table?

They are editorial marks you set on this device against claims already in the aftermath chapter (patient-harm, Journal invention, no tests ever ran, 9 billion public company). Default is unknown. They teach how a public-record file can be read; they are not a legal verdict, not a how-to, and not a private case file.
