Earhart’s disappearance is a navigation and communications failure in public view: a famous pilot, a thin island, a cutter that could hear a voice and could not bring the aircraft in. Howland Island had a new airstrip built for the flight. Itasca’s job was to talk Earhart in and to take radio bearings. Earhart’s Electra used frequencies and a trailing antenna arrangement that, on the morning of 2 July, did not give the cutter a reliable two-way link. Itasca’s logs — later published and much parsed — show her reporting half-hour and then lower fuel, asking for bearings, and finally saying she was on the 157–337 sun line and running north and south.
A sun line is a band, not a point. If Howland was missed, the same line also runs toward the Phoenix Islands. That geometry is why later researchers could argue both a ditching near Howland and a continued flight southeast. It is not, by itself, a wreck site. Noonan’s celestial navigation was the intended fix; the radio was the intended confirmation. Both failed in public.
The United States Navy, including the battleship Colorado and later the carrier Lexington, and the Coast Guard searched thousands of square miles. Reports of reefs and flares were followed and not confirmed as Electra wreckage. George Palmer Putnam, Earhart’s husband and publicist, pressed officials and the press. In January 1939 a California court declared her dead so that estates and contracts could close.

Myth vs. Evidence Fact-Check
How do I read a Theranos claim against this dossier timeline?
Aftermath claims already on file sit beside beats already published here: 2003 founding, 2013 Walgreens rollout, 2014 peak private valuation, 15 October 2015 Journal investigation, 2016 CMS sanctions, 2018 SEC charges and wind-down, 2021 Holmes trial in San Jose. The pairing is a reading aid, not a new court finding.
Was Holmes convicted of harming patients?
The January 2022 Northern District of California verdict convicted her on investor-related wire-fraud counts and acquitted her on patient-related counts. Balwani was convicted on patient-related counts in July 2022. Marking a beat supported or contested on this page does not change that public record and is not this encyclopedia verdict.
Did the Journal invent the laboratory problems?
No. Carreyrou 15 October 2015 Wall Street Journal series is the public break. CMS later sanctioned the Newark lab (2016), and two juries independently found serious false statements. The claim that the Journal invented it is already listed to weigh against those years, not as this page conclusion.
What do supported, contested, and unknown mean on the beat-weight table?
They are editorial marks you set on this device against claims already in the aftermath chapter (patient-harm, Journal invention, no tests ever ran, 9 billion public company). Default is unknown. They teach how a public-record file can be read; they are not a legal verdict, not a how-to, and not a private case file.
