What do beach flags mean?
Systems vary. Many ILS-influenced beaches use red-and-yellow for the lifeguarded swim zone, red for no swimming, and other pennants for wind or hazards. Read the tower board, not a remembered holiday.
What is a rip current?
A seaward current, often beside a sandbar. Lifeguard advice is usually to stay calm and move sideways. This page is not a live rescue script.
Are flotation toys safety equipment?
Arm bands and inflatable seats are not a substitute for touch supervision. A PFD with a rating is a different object.
Who is the ILS?
The International Life Saving Federation, a peak body for lifesaving organisations. It does not patrol a specific beach.
Does this page certify anyone?
No. Tool-Lifes is an atlas. Courses belong to ILS members, Red Cross societies and coastguards.
Safety kit is a barrier, a reach/throw object, and a phone that can call emergency services. A smartwatch is not a watcher.
The expensive, useful item is a lifeguard season or a lesson term, not a branded float.

- Four-sided fence / self-latching gate — Where a private pool exists.
- Reach pole or throw bag — A shed object that should be obvious.
- PFD with a standard mark — For boats, weak swimmers, and cold water: fitted, not decorative.
- Phone in a dry place — Someone must be able to call.
- Whistle — Cheap, loud, boat-and-beach useful.
- The named watcher — Listed as kit on purpose.
Optional
- Door and surface alarms — Adjuncts, not a fence replacement.
- Bright swim cap in open water — Visibility to craft.
- Rescue tube (trained) — A lifeguard tool, not a family toy.
- First-aid certificate — A person, not an object.

- Test the latch — A stuck-open gate is not a fence.
- Rinse throw-bag line — It fails when it is needed.
- Retire cracked foam PFDs — Buoyancy dies quietly.
