The skill is a seal, a relaxed breath, and horizontal fins. Duck-dives are optional and belong closer to the freedive chapter if they get deep or repetitive.
Stay at the surface until the bay is boring. Depth is a different sport.
Steps
- Fit the mask on dry land
Hair out, no gap at the nose. Look down; the mask should stay without the strap as a test.
If it hurts, it is too tight, not “better.”
- Clear the snorkel
A sharp puff after a splash. Keep the head still; the tube follows.
- Enter feet-first in shallows
Walk backward in fins or put fins on in chest-deep water. Never stand on living coral.
A sandy patch is the parking space.
- Swim slowly, look down
Arms still, small kicks from the hip. The point is looking, not a time trial.
A float or noodle is allowed and not embarrassing.
- Glance up for boats
A regular surface check. Stay inside the snorkel zone buoys.
If a boat is moving, assume the helm has not seen a dark head.
- Exit before fatigue
Cramps and wind shifts end the session. Walk out on sand.
Rinse the kit; sunscreen plus salt is a face rash.
Skills
- Mask equalisation on a duck — A brief nose blow if the face goes under a metre.
- Finning without a down-kick — The coral-saving skill.
- Relaxed breathing — Slow nasal-out / mouth-in through the tube; panic is usually a too-tight strap.
- Current reading — Start into the easy current, finish with it, or do not go.
- Buddy distance — Close enough to tap a fin, not a conversation on the beach.
Progression
- Pool or lagoon, no fins — Mask comfort only.
- Fins in a marked snorkel zone — Hanauma-type management.
- Boat snorkel with a guide — Current and deeper water, still at the surface.
- Optional duck-dives < 3 m — Only with equalisation and a buddy — then read freedive-safety.
Common mistakes
- Standing on coral — The classic, photographed, irreversible error.
- Full-face as a first mask — CO2 and panic reports exist; conventional kit first.
- Fins in a crowd of standers — Heel-first coral damage.
- Following a turtle too close — Illegal in many parks and stupid in all of them.
The method is a seal and a horizontal body. Everything else is a park rule.
