Daily kit is a training suit and goggles. The race bag adds a textile race suit, extra caps and a warm-up layer.
If the bag costs more than the meet entries, the priorities are inverted.
Core kit
- Training suit — Durable. Replace when the lining goes transparent, not when a new colour drops.
- Race textile suit — Approved list only. One size that comes off only with help is normal.
- Two pairs of goggles — A spare on the block is a cliché because straps fail.
- Silicone cap plus spare — Latex for racing tightness; silicone for training.
- Kickboard, buoy, fins, paddles — Coach-specified. Paddle size is a shoulder decision.
- Pace watch or clock — Send-offs are the sport’s grammar.
Optional
- Front snorkel — Catch work.
- Tempo trainer — Beep pacing; optional.
- Tech suit (elite meets) — A budget line item, not a personality.
- Parka — Deck cold after a 50 m final is real.
Care
- Rinse race suits cold — Heat and tumble dryers kill them.
- Paper them dry — A common trick; still rinse first.
- Rotate goggles — UV and chlorine haze lenses.
- Check block-compatible shoes — Deck shoes for wet tile, not for the block.
Budget bands
- Club season — Training suits, membership, meet fees — the real cost.
- First race suit — One approved textile.
- Travel meets — Hotels, not more paddles.
- Elite — Multiple race suits per season and a physio line — not the default.
The expensive part is the calendar. Fabric is a footnote except in an Olympic year.
