Quick answers

Which local authority or corridor rules matter for this type?

Start with the local lens: type approval, operator licences and the hubs named on this page — not a single global checklist.

Is this a buying guide?

No. Tool-Lifes /vehicles is an educational atlas. It explains history, systems and culture without affiliate rankings.

Are the scores official?

No. The six scores are relative editorial 0–100 marks across the 48 types on this site.

Where do the photos come from?

Lead images resolve from Wikimedia Commons via Wikipedia titles on the English masters, with licences recorded on the credits page.

Why metric units?

Metric is the default. Regional notes (US customary, local brand culture) appear in culture and market chapters.

How is this different from a wiki article?

Each type gets seven fixed-depth chapters, comparable scores and cross-type labs — structured for browsing, not a single freeform page.

Every Bulldozer is a negotiated stack of structure, energy conversion, control and human interfaces under weather and regulation.

The systems, meters and hotspots below are type-level engineering — manufacturers vary; load paths and failure modes do not.

Systems

Track undercarriage

Sealed and lubricated track links with idlers, sprockets, and rollers spread machine weight over soft ground. Track tension and shoe width set ground pressure and flotation on sand or mud.

Blade & C-frame

Push blade mounts on a C-frame with hydraulic lift, tilt, and angle cylinders. Cutting edge and end bits are consumables; pitch cylinders adjust penetration on hard fill.

Diesel powertrain

Turbocharged diesel drives a torque converter and powershift or hydrostatic transmission to final drives at each sprocket. Low-speed lugging torque defines dozer class more than road speed.

Hydraulic implement circuit

Load-sensing pumps feed blade, ripper, and auxiliary circuits. Joystick pilot controls modulate flow for fine grading versus full push loads.

Operator ROPS cab

FOPS/ROPS cab with AC and pressurization keeps dust out; rear and blade cameras assist blind-side work near haul roads.

Ripper shank (optional)

Single or multi-shank ripper mounted on the rear beam breaks compacted rock or frost ahead of blade passes.

Hotspots

Track link pins

Worn pins elongate pitch and derail tracks under side load on slopes.

Final drive seals

Planet gear oil leaks contaminate brakes and destroy internal gears.

Cutting edge wear

Rounded edges slip rather than cut, raising fuel burn and cycle time.

Hydraulic cylinder rods

Scored rods from dust ingress cause seal failure and blade drift.

Turbocharger coking

Low-RPM high-load operation without cool-down clogs turbine passages.

Materials

Through-hardened track shoes

Quenched steel shoes resist abrasion on rocky sites.

High-strength blade steel

Curved moldboards combine yield strength with weld repairability.

Chromium facing edges

Hard-facing on cutting edges extends change intervals.

Biodegradable hydraulic oil

Some sites mandate env-friendly fluid for leaks near waterways.
