Major honours
Volleyball was invented in the United States, but the country only became a true international power in the 1980s. Coach Doug Beal designed, and Karch Kiraly and Steve Timmons executed, a swing offense in which every player served, moved and attacked, built around power, and the American men won back-to-back golds at Los Angeles in 1984 and Seoul in 1988, plus the 1986 World Championship and 1985 World Cup in between. A third gold followed at Beijing in 2008, and a World Cup title in 2015. The women's team was for a long time the perennial runner-up, losing all four Olympic finals it reached in 1984, 2008, 2012 and 2024, before finally winning its first major title at the 2014 World Championship and, at last, Olympic gold at Tokyo in 2021. The coach for both of those breakthroughs was Kiraly, the greatest player of his own era. The program's 13 Olympic medals in indoor volleyball rank second only to the Soviet Union and Russia.

Rivalry
The rivalry with the Soviet Union, running through the 1984 Los Angeles Games (which the Soviets boycotted) and the 1988 Seoul final (which the US won), read as a Cold War proxy battle. On the women's side, China, a rival in the 1984 final and the 2016 Rio semifinal, and Italy, the opponent in the 2024 Paris final, are the names that sting the most.
