Major honours
Serbia is a rare case of a small country pushing both its men's and women's programs to the very top. Competing as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the men's team won bronze at Atlanta in 1996 before taking gold at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, and won the European Championship three times, in 2001, 2011 and 2019, with setter Nikola Grbic and hitter Ivan Miljkovic as the faces of that generation. Afterward, the weight shifted to the women's team. Serbia's women reached the final at the 2016 Rio Olympics, losing 1-3 to China, then won back-to-back World Championships in 2018 and 2022 and took bronze at Tokyo in 2021. Opposite hitter Tijana Boskovic, the team's centerpiece, was named World Championship MVP and has established herself as one of the top scorers of her generation. Combined, Serbia's men's and women's teams have won 4 Olympic medals in indoor volleyball.

Rivalry
On the women's side, China, which took the gold away in the 2016 Rio final, and Italy, a repeat opponent at the European and World Championships, are the most familiar rivals. On the men's side, a long-running three-way European rivalry with Italy and Russia defines the program.
