The Netherlands punches well above its size in sprint freestyle. The national pool in Eindhoven carries the name of the country's greatest swimmer: Pieter van den Hoogenband won both the 100m and 200m freestyle at Sydney 2000 and defended the 100m at Athens 2004 for three Olympic golds, while at the same 2000 Games Inge de Bruijn swept the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly, then defended the 50m freestyle in 2004 to finish with four career golds. At London 2012, Ranomi Kromowidjojo swept both the 50m and 100m freestyle. More recently the programme's centre of gravity has shifted to open water: Sharon van Rouwendaal won the 10km marathon swim at Rio 2016 and Paris 2024, adding a silver at Tokyo 2020 for three straight podium finishes.

Rivalry

The early-2000s duels between Inge de Bruijn and America's sprinters, and van den Hoogenband's snatching of the 200m freestyle title from home favourite Ian Thorpe in Sydney, define this programme's rivalries.
