Chinese swimming runs on a province-based selection pyramid led by the General Administration of Sport, anchored by the national training base in Beijing, and it has held a place among the world's elite since the 2000s. Sun Yang changed the shape of men's freestyle by sweeping the 400m and 1500m at London 2012, and Zhang Yufei took the 200m butterfly and the women's 4x200m freestyle relay at Tokyo 2020. Paris 2024 was the high point: Pan Zhanle won the 100m freestyle in a world-record 46.40, beating the field by more than a second, and four days later the men's 4x100m medley relay took a title the United States had won at every Olympics it had entered, by just 0.55 seconds. As of 2025, China holds four Olympic individual world records: the men's 100m and 800m freestyle, the men's 200m breaststroke and the women's 200m butterfly. The programme's results, however, are weighed alongside integrity questions, after it emerged in 2024 that 23 swimmers had tested positive for a banned substance ahead of Tokyo 2020 but were cleared on a contamination finding.
