France was long a nation of sprint freestyle. Alain Bernard set the 100m freestyle world record in 2008, Yannick Agnel took the 200m freestyle and the 4x100m relay at London 2012, and siblings Florent and Laure Manaudou won Olympic gold in sprint and middle-distance events respectively. Yet at Tokyo 2020, France won no pool gold at all. The turnaround came at home. Leon Marchand swept the 200m butterfly, 200m breaststroke, 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley at Paris 2024, winning four individual titles at a single Games, with the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke contested within two hours of the same evening. Coached by Bob Bowman at Arizona State, he holds the men's 400m individual medley world record at 4:02.50, and in 2025 he added the 200m individual medley world record as well.

Rivalry

The rivalry with the United States in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay is symbolised by the 0.08-second collapse at Beijing 2008. At Paris 2024, Marchand's win over Hungary's Milak in the 200m butterfly opened up a new axis.
