Major honours
Japan was the first Asian nation to become a swimming power. At the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, Japanese men swept five of six events, and they carried that edge into Berlin 1936, forming one of the pillars of pre-war world swimming. After a long drought, Daichi Suzuki signalled a comeback by winning the 100m backstroke at Seoul 1988, and in the 2000s Kosuke Kitajima completed a breaststroke double-double, sweeping the 100m and 200m at both Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 — a feat no other man has matched. In the 2010s Kosuke Hagino won the 400m individual medley at Rio 2016, and Yui Ohashi swept the 200m and 400m individual medley at Tokyo 2020. At Paris 2024, Tomoyuki Matsushita took silver in the men's 400m individual medley, keeping alive the country's tradition of medley strength.

The breaststroke rivalry between Kitajima and America's Brendan Hansen ran through both Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 as the finest duel in the event. Today the central axis is the fight for Asian supremacy against China and South Korea.
