Founded in 1899, the Italian Swimming Federation treats the outdoor pool at Rome's Foro Italico as its symbolic home, the same pool where 43 world records fell at the 2009 World Championships. Italy's first Olympic swimming gold came at Sydney 2000, when Domenico Fioravanti swept both the 100m and 200m breaststroke, and Federica Pellegrini lifted the sport to mainstream status by winning the women's 200m freestyle at Beijing 2008. In distance events, Gregorio Paltrinieri has stacked medals across the pool and open water since winning 1500m freestyle gold at Rio 2016. Paris 2024 was the best recent Games: Thomas Ceccon won the 100m backstroke and Nicolo Martinenghi the 100m breaststroke for two golds, and Ceccon's 51.60, set in Budapest in 2022, remains the event's world record as of 2025.

Rivalry

The Mediterranean rivalry with France, replayed at every European Championships, is the old axis, while the distance duel between Paltrinieri and Ireland's Daniel Wiffen has become the newer rivalry.
