Major honours
Hong Kong is an unusual case of producing strong players on both the men's and women's side. Marco Fu turned professional in 1997 and won the 2007 UK Championship, becoming the first Hong Kong player to win a Triple Crown event, and rose as high as world number five, long serving as the face of Hong Kong snooker. On the women's side, Ng On-yee ended Reanne Evans's twelve-title winning run at the World Women's Snooker Championship and won it three times herself, lifting the standard of Asian women's snooker a level higher. Both players emerged from a city of just over seven million people, making Hong Kong one of the most efficient snooker programmes relative to its size anywhere in the world. Hong Kong also serves as a geographic hub for the sport's Asian expansion, hosting Asian Tour events alongside Shanghai and Beijing.

Rivalry
On the women's side, Ng On-yee ending England's Reanne Evans's twelve-title dominance is the clearest rivalry storyline between the two countries, while on the men's side China's rapid rise has become a factor squeezing Hong Kong players' standing within Asia.
