Australia is one of the first countries outside the British Isles where snooker genuinely took root. Eddie Charlton reached multiple World Championship finals in the 1960s and 70s but never won, remembered as the finest runner-up never to be champion, nicknamed Steady Eddie. That long wait ended in 2010, when Neil Robertson won the World Championship, becoming only the second player from outside the British Isles to win in the television era, after Cliff Thorburn in 1980. Robertson has since built up more than 24 ranking titles and 5 Triple Crown titles, and in the 2013-14 season became the first player ever to compile 100 century breaks in a single season. Born in Melbourne, he made his own way to Britain as a teenager to build his career, a case often cited as proof that this sport's talent pathway can open through individual will alone, without national backing.
