Belgium went from having almost no presence on the snooker map to representing the entire European continent through a single player. Hasselt's Luca Brecel had been rated the best prospect on mainland Europe since his teens, but his real breakthrough came in 2023. Trailing Mark Selby 5-10 in the World Championship final, he was caught on camera eating pizza during the mid-session interval, a moment that went viral, and was quickly read as a sign he was playing without pressure. He then completed a dramatic comeback to win 18-15, becoming the first world champion from outside the British Isles, and the first ever from continental Europe. The win is recorded as the moment that first broke a run of champions drawn only from Britain and Ireland, and later Commonwealth countries, that had lasted more than a century, and it revived interest in snooker right across mainland Europe near Belgium.
