Major honours
The United States is the only country to have produced a champion in all four Olympic disciplines. Dick Button swept the 1948 and 1952 Olympic men's titles and turned a figure-centered discipline into an athletic event, and the men's line that followed him — Hayes Alan Jenkins, David Jenkins, Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Evan Lysacek and Nathan Chen — has produced eight Olympic gold medals on its own. The women's side left an even longer golden era: Peggy Fleming (1968), Dorothy Hamill (1976), Kristi Yamaguchi (1992) and Sarah Hughes (2002) shared Olympic titles across 34 years. On 15 February 1961, the crash of Sabena Flight 548 killed the entire team travelling to the World Championships in Prague, but a memorial fund created in the victims' names went on to rebuild the next generation. In 2022 the team also received the 2024 Olympic team gold retroactively after Russia's disqualification.

Rivalry
The rivalry with the Soviet Union and Russia is the longest-running, dating to the Cold War, and in pairs and ice dance especially, Russia has dominated territory the United States has barely entered for nearly half a century.
