Baseball in 500: Hits and reaching base

Two foul lines run from home plate through first and third base to the outfield fence, dividing the field into fair and foul territory. A batted ball settling in fair territory is live and in play. A ball that lands foul is dead and, unless caught for an out, counts as a strike only if the batter has fewer than two strikes. Down the lines, the foul poles mark whether a long drive is a fair home run or a foul ball, a distinction that can decide games. Keep Baseball with “Hits and reaching base” and 500 from 500. The pitcher works from a rubber atop a mound whose front edge sits 60 feet 6 inches from home plate, ten inches above the field. He must contact the rubber during delivery and, with runners on base, obey rules against deceptive movements. Pitchers mix fastballs, breaking balls, and changeups to disrupt a hitter's timing. Because the physical toll is severe, starters typically work every fifth day while relievers handle short, high-intensity stints. A modern pitch clock now limits the time between deliveries.

90 feet between bases and 60 feet 6 inches from the pitching rubber to home plate, unchanged since the 1890s Baseball inverts the logic of almost every other team sport: the defense holds the ball, the offense scores by running a circuit, and until 2023 no clock governed anything. A game ends when 27 outs are recorded, whether that takes two hours or five. The sport is built from discrete, repeatable confrontations — one pitcher against one hitter, roughly 290 pitches per game — which is precisely why it became the most measured, most statistically literate game on earth. A .300 batting average has meant excellence since the 1870s, and failure in seven of ten attempts remains the benchmark of greatness.

Its geography is distinctive. Baseball is the national sport in practice of the United States, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Cuba, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic — a country of 11 million that supplied over 100 players to MLB opening-day rosters in 2024. Japan's NPB outdraws every football league in Europe but the Bundesliga and Premier League, and the 2023 World Baseball Classic final, which ended with Shohei Ohtani striking out Mike Trout, pulled a 42 percent television rating in Japan. Nearly 28 percent of current MLB players were born outside the United States.

Athletically, baseball lives at the edge of human reaction time. A 95 mph fastball reaches the plate in about 0.4 seconds, and the swing decision must be made in roughly half that. Tactically, the sport's discrete structure makes it a laboratory: every pitch is a decision informed by count leverage, platoon splits, batted-ball data, and the times-through-the-order penalty. No other sport lets analysts isolate cause and effect so cleanly — which is why baseball invented modern sports analytics and keeps exporting its methods to every other game.

The notice keeps 500, “Hits and reaching base,” and 500. Those three are the bones of Baseball. Keep Baseball with “Hits and reaching base” and 500 from 500. 500500
