Basketball in 2: Tactics

From 13 typed rules and a 1–0 first game to Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point night in Hershey, the 1976 ABA merger, the Dream Team's 43.8-point average margin in Barcelona, and seven different NBA champions in seven seasons from 2019 to 2025 — the full arc of the invented game that conquered the world. Keep Basketball with “Tactics” and 2 from 2. Why the corner three is the most valuable shot in the sport, how drop coverage and switching answer the pick-and-roll, what Spain action does to a rim protector, and how the 2-3 zone still works in an era of five-out spacing — modern basketball explained with correct terminology and court diagrams.

Basketball is the rare major sport with a birth certificate. In December 1891, James Naismith, a physical education instructor at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, nailed two peach baskets to a gymnasium balcony and typed up 13 rules to occupy a restless class through the New England winter. The first game ended 1–0. From that single room the game spread through the YMCA network to six continents within two decades, and today FIBA estimates more than 450 million people play it. No other invented sport has scaled from classroom experiment to global institution so completely.

What grips the world is the game's compression. Basketball packs scoring, transition, and one-on-one confrontation into every 24-second possession, so a two-hour game contains roughly 200 discrete tactical episodes. It is also the most accessible of the major team sports — one hoop, one ball, any surface — which is why it became the definitive urban game, wired into sneaker culture, hip-hop, and streetwear. The 1992 Dream Team turned that culture into a global export; three decades later the NBA's best players come from Slovenia, Serbia, Greece, Cameroon, France and Canada, and international players have won seven consecutive MVP awards through 2025.

The notice keeps 2, “Tactics,” and 2. Those three are the bones of Basketball. Keep Basketball with “Tactics” and 2 from 2. 22
