- Acetylation — Vetiveryl acetate as a polite root.
- Overdose study — Malle-style: let the material be the perfume.
- Khus screen — Passive cooling as a scent engine.
Steps
- Pick a profile
Nutty Haiti or smoke Java.
A 50/50 can be excellent if intended.
- Lift with peel
Grapefruit or bergamot.
Sweet fruit makes a different family.
- Decide on tobacco
Guerlain’s dry leaf versus clean root.
Tobacco tips toward leather.
- Soften or don’t
Acetate for office, oil for study.
Sycomore uses iris, not sugar.
- Long maceration
Root oils settle and darken.
Patience.
- Wear on cool days first
Heat pushes smoke and peanut.
Some love that; warn testers.
Limits
- Peanut / smoke rejection — A common “I hate vetiver” report.
- Masculine shelf bias — Unisex Sycomore still fights the aisle.
- Dirt if unwashed — Bad stills smell like mud only.
A good Vetiver formula knows its IFRA ceiling before it knows its ad.
