How it unfolded
Italy's women's national team hired Julio Velasco as head coach in late 2023, the same coach who built Italy's men's golden generation of the 1990s and who had missed out on Olympic gold by losing a five-set final to the Netherlands at Atlanta in 1996. Eight months into the job, he took Italy through the Paris tournament without losing a single match. The final opponent was Tokyo Olympic champion United States. Italy led on serve in all three sets. Paola Egonu repeatedly hit over the American block with her left-handed swing, while libero Monica De Gennaro anchored the back row. The scores read 25-18, 25-20, 25-17; the United States never closed the gap late in any set. Watched by 9,340 fans, this match gave Italy its first-ever Olympic gold medal in volleyball, with Egonu named tournament MVP and Best Opposite, and De Gennaro named Best Libero.
Why it still matters
This is the match in which Italian volleyball, men's or women's, reached the top of the Olympic podium for the first time, completing a shift in which European women's volleyball overtook Asia and the Americas at the summit of the sport. Italy went on to win the 2025 World Championship in Bangkok the following year as well, holding both titles simultaneously. That Velasco, runner-up on the same stage 28 years earlier, stood on the winning side this time is part of what makes this match one to remember.
