How it unfolded
Poland had already cracked the Soviet Union's dominance by winning the 1974 World Championship in Mexico, but had never beaten the Soviets at the Olympics. Coach Hubert Wagner, nicknamed 'the Executioner,' drove the team through brutal conditioning, with captain Edward Skorek and towering attacker Tomasz Wojtowicz carrying the offense. The final opened with Poland dropping the first set 11-15. They took the second 15-13, but lost the third again 13-15, falling behind two sets to one. The match turned in the fourth set. Under the side-out scoring system, where only the serving team could score, a single point often required several rallies, and even after the Soviets reached match point the set continued. Poland fought it off and, through repeated deuces, took the set 19-17. With momentum fully turned, the fifth set was one-sided, 15-7.
Why it still matters
This remains the only Olympic volleyball gold Poland has ever won, and it was the first time the Soviet Union's dominance within the Eastern Bloc had visibly cracked. The match elevated volleyball to the status of a national sport in Poland, laying the cultural groundwork for the PlusLiga to become the best-attended volleyball league in the world four decades later, and for the national team to win back-to-back World Championships in 2014 and 2018.
