The PGA Tour is the long-established elite men's circuit, running dozens of 72-hole, four-day tournaments a year with a 36-hole cut and a season-long FedEx Cup. LIV Golf, launched in 2022 with Saudi Public Investment Fund backing, is a rival league that signed many stars to large guaranteed contracts and uses a different format: 54 holes, no cut, shotgun starts and a team competition alongside the individual event.
In December 2023 the USGA and R&A, golf's governing bodies, announced that they will change the conforming standard for golf balls to reduce how far they fly at high swing speeds. Elite hitters could lose roughly 13 to 15 yards, while recreational players, who swing slower, will be affected far less. The change takes effect for professional and elite competition in 2028 and for everyone in 2030.

A standard round is 18 holes, and it typically takes about four to four and a half hours to play, whether walking or riding in a cart. Pace depends on the number of players in the group, the difficulty of the course, and how busy it is; a crowded weekend course can push a round beyond five hours. Nine-hole rounds, taking around two hours, are increasingly popular for players short on time.
The objective of golf is simple to state and punishing to execute: move the ball from the tee into the hole in the fewest strokes, then repeat across eighteen holes. Each hole has a par of 3, 4 or 5, reflecting the strokes an expert should need, and a player's score is measured against that par.
