The primary gateway is the annual two-round draft, in which teams select players who are at least 19 years old and one year removed from high school — the one-and-done rule in force since 2006, which pushed elite American prospects through a single college season.
Basketball · What is the shot clock and why was it introduced?
The shot clock gives the offense a fixed window — 24 seconds in the NBA, FIBA and WNBA — to attempt a shot that hits the rim, or possession is forfeited. It exists because early professional basketball had a stalling problem: with no time limit, leading teams simply held the ball, culminating in the Fort Wayne Pistons' notorious 19–18 win over the Minneapolis Lakers on November 22, 1950.

Basketball · How tall is a basketball hoop, and why 10 feet?
Every regulation basketball rim sits exactly 10 feet — 3.05 meters — above the floor, measured to the top of the ring, a standard used from youth leagues to the NBA and unchanged since 1891. The height was never calculated for difficulty; it was simply where the running-track balcony railing sat in the Springfield gymnasium when James Naismith nailed up his peach baskets.
Basketball · The objective is simple to state and endlessly hard to execute:
The objective is simple to state and endlessly hard to execute: put the ball through your opponent's hoop more often than they put it through yours, scoring two points for a field goal inside the arc, three from beyond it, and one for a free throw.
