Entering the final rotation, China led Japan by 3.267 points with only high bar remaining. The outcome appeared essentially decided. But China's Su Weide lost his grip twice during release moves, and the resulting falls stacked directly onto the deduction column, with scores in the 11-point range instantly erasing the gap. Japan handled its final three routines calmly. Daiki Hashimoto closed with a 14.566, bringing the final total to 259.594 against China's 259.062, a margin of 0.532. Japan reclaimed the men's team title for the first time since Rio 2016, and counting the five-in-a-row run from 1960 to 1976, it was the program's eighth Olympic team gold overall. The United States took bronze, returning to the men's team podium for the first time since Beijing 2008, 16 years earlier. Days later, Japan's Shinnosuke Oka completed the storyline by winning the all-around.
Why it still matters
The competition that most clearly demonstrated why the three-up, three-count format is the cruelest in the sport. With no score to drop, two falls erased a lead of more than three points. At the same time, the result confirmed that the two-power structure between Japan and China has held firm in the men's team event reshaped by Russia's absence, and that the United States has re-entered medal contention.
