How it unfolded
Competing under the temporary designation of the Unified Team after the Soviet Union's dissolution, the Belarusian Scherbo entered apparatus finals day having already secured team and all-around gold. That single day he competed in the pommel horse, rings, vault and parallel bars finals — and won all four. His total for the Games reached six gold medals, still the record for the most gold medals won by a gymnast at a single Summer Olympics. It was the first six-gold haul at a single Summer Games by any athlete since Mark Spitz in 1972. His strength was not any single apparatus but versatility across all of them: a gymnast who combined the shoulder strength rings demands, the explosive power vault requires, and the rhythmic sense pommel horse rewards was rare before him and has been rare since. He went on to win the all-around at the following year's Birmingham Worlds and finished his career with 12 World Championship gold medals.
Why it still matters
The Soviet system's final output and the competition that announced its end. Within days the Unified Team dissolved and its coaches and athletes scattered across more than a dozen newly formed federations. Scherbo's six golds remain a mark no gymnast has come close to since, and his four golds in a single day of apparatus finals is now considered essentially unrepeatable under a scoring system with no upper ceiling.
