The United States led Russia, but the margin turned uncertain after Dominique Moceanu fell on both her attempts, and the final competitor, Kerri Strug, sat down hard on her first attempt, scoring 9.162 and injuring her left ankle. Limping back to the runway, she was urged by coach Bela Karolyi to attempt a second vault. She landed on both feet, held briefly, then immediately shifted her weight to her right foot alone, saluted the judges, and collapsed onto the mat. The score was 9.712. The United States held off Russia and Romania to secure the first Olympic team gold in women's gymnastics history, and the image of Karolyi carrying Strug to the podium became the defining picture of the Games. It later emerged, on recount, that the American win had already been secured even without Strug's second vault — a fact that became the starting point for a debate about a coaching culture that pressures injured athletes to compete anyway.

At the time it was consumed as a symbol of grit, but after the Nassar case the same footage began to be read entirely differently, and a reassessment of whether competing through injury should be treated as a virtue led to revised safeguarding rules across national federations.
