Cycling (Road) in 1892: Liege-Bastogne-Liege founded

Cycling (Road) is reduced to one rule in 1892: “Liege-Bastogne-Liege founded.” The figure to remember with it is 1900. A popularity ranking of players is not that figure. Separate kit, time, and the foul. The individual time trial, the race of truth, strips racing to its essence: one rider alone against the clock, with no teammates and no drafting allowed. Success depends on aerodynamics, honed in wind tunnels through pos

An individual sport won by teams, where drafting, mountains and split-second timing decide everything. Road cycling is an endurance sport contested on open roads, where riders race individually and in trade teams over distances from a 250-kilometre one-day Classic to a three-week Grand Tour covering roughly 3,500 kilometres. Its defining paradox is that cycling is an individual sport won by teams: aerodynamic drafting means a rider sheltered in the bunch spends up to 30 percent less energy than the rider on the front, so victory depends on when a leader chooses to spend the reserves his teammates protect. Contests are decided by cumulative time, sprint finishes, or lone attacks, usually after five or six hours in the saddle.

Cycling grips people because the drama unfolds across landscapes rather than inside a stadium. A Grand Tour is a rolling three-week narrative through mountain passes, cobbled farm roads and coastal sprints, free to watch from any roadside, drawing an estimated ten to twelve million spectators to the Tour de France alone. The tension is tactical and physiological at once: a race can be blown apart by a crosswind, a badly timed puncture, or a single acceleration on a 10-percent gradient. Suffering is visible and shared, and reputations are built over decades of Classics, jerseys and rivalries that fans argue about for generations.

What makes road cycling singular is the layering of competitions inside a single event. In one Grand Tour, riders simultaneously contest the overall classification on cumulative time, a points jersey for sprinters, a mountains classification, and a best-young-rider prize, while teams chase stage wins for their sponsors. Equipment is inseparable from the sport, from sub-7-kilogram climbing bikes to wind-tunnel-honed time-trial positions. And unlike most professional sports, its calendar spans continents and seasons, from the Belgian cobbles of spring to the Alpine passes of July, demanding riders who can climb, sprint, time-trial and simply survive week after week.
