Formula 1 in 2024: Knockout qualifying

Formula 1 is reduced to one rule in 2024: “Knockout qualifying.” The figure to remember with it is 1. A popularity ranking of players is not that figure. Separate kit, time, and the foul. Formula 1 is the summit of single-seater motor racing: ten teams design, build and relentlessly redevelop the fastest circuit-racing cars on earth, then send twenty drivers to fight over them across a world championship

Cumulative audience of roughly 1.5 billion (2023 season) 372.5 km/h — Valtteri Bottas, Mexico City 2016 10 teams and 20 drivers; an 11th team (Cadillac) joins in 2026 What grips the world is the collision of glamour, danger and consequence. Monaco has hosted the championship's most famous race since 1950 on streets barely wide enough for one modern car; Monza, Spa and Suzuka carry a century of accumulated mythology. The stakes were once mortal — the sport killed champions and rookies alike into the 1990s — and the safety revolution that followed Ayrton Senna's death at Imola in 1994 is one of the great engineering redemption stories. Today more than 750 million fans follow a travelling city of roughly 3,000 people that airfreights itself around the planet, and a single title decision, like Abu Dhabi 2021, can dominate global sports news for weeks.

Athletically and tactically, nothing else resembles it. Drivers hold their bodies against sustained cornering loads above 5g while their heart rates average 160-plus beats per minute for two hours, losing up to three kilograms of fluid in hot races. Around them unfolds a strategy game played in real time by pit walls running thousands of race simulations: when to pit, which tyre compound to take, whether to undercut the car ahead or run long and attack on fresher rubber. A pit stop takes under two and a half seconds — the record is 1.80 seconds, set by McLaren in Qatar in 2023 — and a single misjudged stop can decide a championship.

A Grand Prix is won by covering the race distance — a minimum of 305 kilometres, cut to about 260 at Monaco — in the shortest total time, starting from a grid position earned in Saturday's qualifying. But a single Sunday is only half the contest. Formula 1 awards points at every round toward two season-long world championships, one for drivers and one for constructors, so the true objective is to out-score every rival across a 24-race calendar, not merely to win any one race.

“Knockout qualifying” for Formula 1 in 2024 carries 1. That figure is not a star’s rank.2024
