Diana Baumrind’s classic styles — authoritative, authoritarian, permissive — were built from mid-century Californian observations. They remain useful scaffolding. They become harmful when treated as a global ranking of moral worth. Cross-cultural psychologists find that “control” can signal love and protection in some contexts and intrusion in others. Children read the meaning of a raised voice or a firm schedule through local scripts of respect.

Sensitive responsiveness predicts better outcomes across many societies. What counts as respectful speech, eye contact, or challenge to adult authority varies widely — from Confucian filial norms to Scandinavian egalitarianism. An immigrant family may look “authoritarian” to a school counsellor while practising a culturally coherent blend of devotion and high expectation. Misreading that blend as coldness is a diversity failure, not science.

Independence is not the only adult goal Some middle-class Western ideals prize early self-feeding, solo sleep and assertive self-expression. Other ideals prize interdependence, quiet attentiveness and family reputation. Both can raise competent adults. Problems arise when institutions (schools, clinics) reward only one ideal and pathologise the other. Parents then face a double bind: succeed at home or succeed in the official culture.
