If a test is “will this kanji bring wealth,” stop. That is not craft in this atlas.
Steps
- 1Write the audiences
Home language, school language, travel documents.
One name may need a romanisation plan.
- 2Stress-test spelling
Ask three people to write it from hearing and say it from writing.
Asymmetry here is the real product.
- 3File a dummy form
Check character lists, length limits, and surname order.
German and Japanese counters are unforgiving.
- 4Read a dated chart
If you look at SSA or ONS, pick a year and a sex category as published.
No live global champion.
- 5Record the reason
Kin, sound, saint, generation syllable — a reason you can say without luck talk.
Reasons travel better than vibes.
- 6Plan the nickname
Decide what short form you will accept in classrooms.

Checklist
- Said by outsiders — Fluency check.
- Spelled by outsiders — Orthographic check.
- Registry-legal — Namensrecht, Iceland, jinmeiyō as relevant.
- Year-stamped rank only — If you cite popularity, cite the office and year.
- No stroke-luck step — Quality ≠ numerology.
- Sibling-set check — 돌림자 or generation names should match on purpose.
- Initials and email — Avoid accidental words if that matters to you.
- Bearer kindness — Imagine the name at age 15 and 50.
Pitfalls
- Rank worship — Treating last year’s ONS leader as a quality certificate.
- Meaning maximalism — Picking a gloss from a baby site and calling it science.
- English-form imperialism — Forcing one given + one surname on a two-surname or patronymic family.
- Secret destiny rubric — Hidden stroke or star charts that the child cannot consent to.
Tools
- IPA or respelling — A one-line pronunciation key is a quality tool.
- Official lists — Icelandic approved names; Japanese jinmeiyō; German guidance.
- Historical frequency files — SSA, ONS, Statistics Korea — always with a year.
- Family generation table — For character-name systems, the poem or 돌림자 chart is the real spec.
When the tests conflict, name the conflict (heritage vs. ease) instead of inventing a cosmic tie-breaker.
