Craft

Reading and choosing place names without a souvenir etymology.

Craft for citizens is asking “which language, which year, which board?” Craft for planners is knowing that a commemoration is a future argument.

Do not pick a suburb name from a baby-name peak unless you want that fashion baked into the address.

Steps

  1. 1Collect the layers

    Endonym, exonym, colonial, restored.

    Write the languages.

  2. 2Open a gazetteer / board decision

BGN, national names authority, UNGEGN notes.

    Not a tourism blog.

  3. 3Separate legend from derivation

    Folk etymology labelled as such.

    Dragons in their own box.

  4. 4If naming a new place, run the insult matrix

    Other languages, abbreviations, rhymes.

    Brand-naming’s cousin.

  5. 5Plan the dual-name display

Sign length, data fields, emergency services.

    Practical difficulty hides here.

  6. 6Record the decision

Who chose, when, why — for the next fight.

    Transparency as craft.

A good place-name decision can be footnoted. A cute one often cannot.
