Nicknames

Craft

Choosing, offering and retiring unofficial names.

Craft is consent plus a migration plan. If you want the nickname to be the name, say so in every room that still uses the other one.

If you are assigning a nickname to someone else, you are not the protagonist.

Steps

  1. 1Ask, do not assign

Offer a short form; wait for uptake.

    Silence is not consent.

  2. 2Separate fond from funny

If the joke needs the person smaller, stop.

    Cruelty is not creativity.

  3. 3Put it on the badge

If it is the used name, print it.

    Half-official is how errors live.

  4. 4Retire in public

Correct introducers once, kindly, on the record.

    Private-only requests fail.

  5. 5Check the handle

Usernames may freeze an old nickname.

    See usernames.

  6. 6Know when to file

If cheques and visas need it, start a legal change.

    Nicknames cannot cash themselves.

A good nickname is one the bearer would print on a sticker. Everything else is a draft you should delete.
